Moscow, Petrovsky Putevoy Dvorets

Travelers houses were built up along the road from Moscow to St. Petersburg so that imperial noblemen on route could have stopped for rest there. Moscow Putevoy Dvorets or Petrovsky Travelling Palace was erected on Tverskoy (Peterburzhsky) tract on Catherine the Great’s order after the end of Russian-Turkish war of 1768-1774. To celebrate the end of war, the empress injoined architect Vasily Bazhenov to build a theatre – city on Khodinka Field "beset in the fanciful and ornate Turkish way". Putevoy Dvorets was erected by Matvei Kazakov, Bazhenov’s helper, on the church lands of Vysokopetrovsky monastery (it is where its name came from – Petrovsky Putevoy Dvorets). It was built by Kazakov after the fashion of his teacher’s masterpiece that is red-and-white figured castle with cupolas and minarets, surrounded by embattled fortress walls.

Interior decoration of the palace was run in a classic style. Catherine II was overjoyed with the palace. It was there where the empress herself and her son Paul I stopped a few times, and where many would-be Russian monarchs made a stop on their way to Moscow for coronation. During the fall of 1812 the Petrovsky Palace was where Napoleon sat of hopes waiting, in vain, for the keys of Moscow. And it was from there that he started his retreat from Moscow. Petrovsky Palace is one of a few buildings which survived after the terrible fire that engulfed Moscow in 1812.

In the Soviet era, it was allocated to the Zhukovsky Military-Engineering Academy of Aviation. Nowadays, the Petrovsky Dvorets have acquired the status of the “palace”, and, with it, its restoration and reconstruction works (which lasted about 10 years) have been completed by 2008, and the building acquired its former historical appearance and sight. The palace was officially reopened on March 8th, 2009 by the Moscow Mayor Yury Lushkov, and currently it hosts the International Centre of Cooperation, House of Receptions of the Government of Moscow, serving as well as a hotel for top-level officials, and visiting dignitaries. The hotel rooms have been also built up in those rooms where Napoleon stayed. The Palace is furnished with up-to-date convenient olde-worlde styled, antique furniture has been restored. On the first floor of the Palace, there are rooms exposed to visitors.
